I am a firm believer that some songs just shouldn’t exist…this is most definitely one of them. While guys like The Lonely Island can make fun of boatz, vocoderz, and being gangsta…this just doesn’t do it for me. I know this is a total joke, but I want it to stop.

6/13/2009 Riding the wave of her debut album, R & B sensation Keri Hilson left it all on the stage at Super Jam 2 in St. Louis, MO. Dressed in a skin-tight black and blue outfit that few could pull off, Hilson gave the audience a high-energy set full of excitement.

6/21/2009 Talking with lead singer AJ Perdomo before The Dangerous Summer came into town, he predicted an energetic live performance full of crowd-pumping hits. After seeing the band perform, the group exceded expectations as they kicked off a night full of energy at the Grog Shop.

Russian-born singer-songwriter and master pianist Regina Spektor, as her latest album “Far” testifies to, has to be one of the most talented and creative musicians working today. Take for example “Folding Chair”, in which Regina squeaks part of its chorus like a dolphin, or “Machine”, which effectively incorporates sounds from David Byrne’s “Playing The Building” project into a song that, as Regina describes it, sounds like “robots walking in the snow.” Or you could point to the detail-oriented “Wallet”, where Regina sings about discovering a man’s wallet that she then describes the contents of in a heartfelt and heartbreaking ballad.
Clearly, as introduced in her first album “Begin To Hope” and strengthened in “Far”, quirkiness comes easily to Spektor. What’s amazing about Spektor, however, is her ability to transform her oddity into songs that are uplifting and deep. Never before has a pianist made simplicity so intriguing.
Working with four producers on “Far”, including Jeff Lynne, the mastermind behind the Electric Light Orchestra, Spektor has produced an album that feels fresh, yet worn-in like an old baseball mitt. It will take you about one listen to start humming the songs on “Far”, but more than a few to understand their complexity.

Singer-songwriter and virtuoso pianist Regina Spektor, whose first album “Begin To Hope” sold over 600, 000 copies and made its way into the Top 20, has just returned from busily touring Europe to promote her latest album “Far”, due on Tuesday. As she tells The New York Times, the inspiration for her latest album came from the realization that humans are so incredibly small compared to the vastness of the universe. As it turns out, her realization began to haunt her into writing songs for “Far.” Whatever the inspiration, the Russian-born singer’s music pushes conventions and invites contemplation. I don’t even know how to describe mashups anymore…they are either massive failures or creative genius. This dude from Nashua, NH, named E-603 knowns how to piece em together.
I hate comparing every mashup to Gregg Gillis / Girl Talk, but 603 is right on par as far as albums go. His newest project Torn Up is gonna work you into a frenzy. My one criticism of Feed the Animals seemed to be GT’s continual use of call-and-response. Torn Up seems to stray from that more which I appreciate. It’s that special place where gangsta meets rockstar meets dancefloor…Cruise over to his website and grab yourself a copy!
